Treatment Options for Severely Atrophic Maxillae

ثبت نشده
چکیده

In this chapter, two main treatment options for severely edentulous atrophic posterior maxillae—bone augmentation procedure and zygomatic implant application—are presented. Poor bone quality and insufficient bone volume due to critical jawbone atrophy in the posterior maxillae are addressed as the main factors contribute to the failure of dental implant system. The rationales behind the introduction of each treatment option are discussed and compared for a better understanding. As this text placed an emphasis on the use of zygomatic implants, a high focus is given to this section covering the specification of zygomatic implants, advantages and disadvantages, indications and contraindications of treatment, types of surgical approach for the implant placement and survival rate of implants. This chapter provides sufficient information on the treatment of patient with severely atrophic posterior maxillae specifically via the use of nongrafting procedure, zygomatic implant. The application of zygomatic implant is gaining popularity over conventional bone augmentation procedure as a treatment modality.

Modified technique using multiple zygomatic implants in reconstruction of the atrophic maxilla: a technical note.

Zygomatic implants have been in use since the 1990s for the treatment of patients with severely resorbed maxillae. Here, the authors present a modification of the standard zygomatic implant technique that uses up to 3 implants on each side of the maxilla for support of a dental prosthesis.

The fluorohydroxyapatite (FHA) FRIOS Algipore is a suitable biomaterial for the reconstruction of severely atrophic human maxillae.

Grafting of the maxillary sinus is an established treatment modality to provide sufficient bone for the fixation of dental implants. We stated the hypothesis that the porous fluorohydroxyapatitic (FHA) biomaterial FRIOS Algipore could be used as a suitable biomaterial for sinus grafting in severely atrophic maxillae. To investigate the accuracy of our hypothesis, 69 trephine specimens from 26 p...

The buccal fat pad flap: an option to prevent and treat complications regarding complex zygomatic implant surgery. Preliminary report.

PURPOSE To evaluate the use of the buccal fat pad flap (BFPF) technique as an option to prevent complications in the treatment of patients with atrophic maxillae rehabilitated after complex zygomatic implant surgery. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective study was made of completely edentulous patients submitted to zygomatic implant surgery between May 2005 and November 2007. Patients with se...

Treatment of a severely atrophic maxilla using an immediately loaded, implant-supported fixed prosthesis without the use of bone grafts: a clinical report.

This report describes a clinical approach to using the zygomatic and pterygomaxillary bones to provide additional anchorage for longer implants to support an immediately functional maxillary screw-retained provisional fixed prosthesis. The purpose is to report the problems of patients who have experienced the most severe form of maxillary alveolar resorption and to demonstrate a specific protoc...

Restoration of the edentulous maxilla using extrasinus zygomatic implants combined with anterior conventional implants: a retrospective study.

PURPOSE To report on the clinical outcome of 150 extrasinus zygomatic implants placed lateral to the maxillary sinus and combined with conventional implants in the anterior maxilla for the implant-supported rehabilitation of the edentulous maxilla. MATERIALS AND METHODS All patients included in this study presented with completely or partially edentulous maxillae with any remaining teeth indi...
